How to Lubricate Flexhaft Attachment for Dremel:

Lubricating the inner core of a flex shaft attachment for a rotary tool is essential for smooth operation and preventing premature wear. Here's a breakdown of how to do it:

1. Gather Your Supplies:

  • Appropriate Lubricant: Use white lithium grease, or a specialized flex shaft lubricant. Avoid thick greases or oils that can gum up the mechanism.
  • Clean Cloth or Paper Towels: For wiping excess lubricant.

2. Disconnect the Flex Shaft:

  • Always disconnect the flex shaft from the rotary tool before lubricating it. This prevents accidental activation and potential injury.

3. Access the Inner Core:

  • Remove the Collet and Shaft: At the tool end of the flex shaft, remove the collet nut and collet. Then, carefully pull out the inner core (the flexible shaft itself).

4. Clean the Inner Core:

  • OPTIONAL FOR OLD UNITS - Wipe Clean: Use a clean cloth or paper towel to wipe off any old grease, dirt, or debris from the inner core. You can use a small brush to help remove stubborn buildup.
  • OPTIONAL FOR OLD UNITS - Solvent Cleaning: If the core is very dirty, you can use a mild solvent like mineral spirits or isopropyl alcohol on a cloth to clean it. Make sure the solvent is completely dry before lubricating.

5. Apply Lubricant:

  • Grease: If using grease, apply a thin, even coating along the length of the core. Avoid over-greasing, as this can attract more dirt and debris.
  • Avoid the Outer Sheath: Do not apply lubricant to the outer sheath of the flex shaft.

6. Reassemble the Flex Shaft:

  • Carefully reinsert the inner core into the outer sheath.
  • Reattach the collet and collet nut.

7. Test the Flex Shaft:

  • Reconnect the flex shaft to the rotary tool.
  • Run the tool at a low speed for a few seconds to distribute the lubricant.

Lubrication Frequency:

  • The frequency of lubrication depends on how often you use the flex shaft. For regular use (several times a week), lubricate it every few weeks or once a month. For occasional use, lubricate it every few months.
  • If you notice the flex shaft becoming noisy, vibrating excessively, or feeling stiff, it's time to lubricate it.

Important Notes:

  • Over-Lubrication: Over-lubricating can be as bad as under-lubricating. Excess lubricant can attract dirt and debris, which can cause wear and tear.

By following these steps, you can keep your flex shaft in good working condition and extend its lifespan.
